Jerry Lauver believed that athletics, first and foremost , were meant to be
enjoyed; that the final numbers on the scoreboard were not the full measure
of the meaning of the contest. Not that he didn't also enjoy winning; he was
as spirited a competitor as there ever was in our league. It was the fatherly
approach he took with his team, and the enthusiastic, uplifting and joyful
approach he brought to the diamond , that made him a great coach and endeared
him to all players. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of fielding,
throwing and hitting, Jerry implored his girls to root for each other, support
each other as he supported them and to encourage one another when the chips were
down. He was a patient and knowledgeable mentor who believed in giving every
girl an equal chance to play and equal time to develop her skills on the field.
The main request he had of his team was that they have fun. Jerry's tireless,
thoughtful and generous contributions to our league will long live in memory of
Miss Shen Softball. ~~Sue Lauver
